| The Foundation of St.
Alban's Band Back to History |
The origin of the St. Alban's band was
in the desire to have the parishes own band to lead the Corpus Christie
Procession. Before 1897 the Procession was led by a Hungarian band but the
parishioners wanted one of their own. At first a Fife Band was planned, but
this was not a success. In 1897 parishioners collected money to buy second hand
instruments for a Brass Band. Mr. Merry, the organist of St. Peter's gave the sixteen recruits lessons and one Mr. Evers, the conductor of the Tin Works Band, taught them advanced intrumental music. Captain Steven Steele, a Naval Captain was interrested in the band and under his influence they adopted for a time naval uniform. ![]() Captain Steven Steele and his family The Band wnet on not only to play for Corpus Christi but also for mathces at Cardiff Arms Park and still plays today.
