Praying the rosary

The Rosary is way of reflecting on the Lord's life and the key aspects of his teaching. By tradition it dates back to St. Dominic and is one of the ways of praying that all Catholics either do know or should know. It is a way of meditating on the Gospels and a mantra to help us keep our minds open to the Lord.

To recite the Rosary is nothing other than to contemplate with Mary the face of Christ. As a way of highlighting this invitation, prompted by the forthcoming 120th anniversary of the aforementioned Encyclical of Leo XIII, I desire that during the course of this year the Rosary should be especially emphasized and promoted in the various Christian communities.

John Paul II, ROSARIUM VIRGINIS MARIAE

“The Rosary of the Virgin Mary, which gradually took form in the second  millennium under the guidance of the Spirit of God, is a prayer loved by countless Saints and encouraged by the Magisterium. Simple yet profound, it still remains, at the dawn of this third millennium, a prayer of great  significance, destined to bring forth a harvest of holiness. It blends easily into the spiritual journey of the Christian life, which, after two thousand years, has lost none of the freshness of its beginnings and feels drawn by the Spirit of God to "set out into the deep" (duc in altum!) in order once more to proclaim, and even cry out, before the world that Jesus Christ is Lord and Saviour, "the way, and the truth and the life" (Jn 14:6).”

Rosary Prayers

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth; and in   Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,  born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died  and was buried; he descended into hell; the third day he arose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God, the Father  almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life  everlasting.  Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread;  and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace! the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.  Holy Mary, mother of God, pray  for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.  Amen.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.  As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen.

Hail, holy queen, Mother of mercy; hail, our life, our sweetness, and our hope!  To you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.  To you do we send up our cries, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears.  Turn then, most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy towards us; and after this our exile, show to us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus.  O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.

That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Concluding Prayer

Let us pray: O God, whose only-begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life; grant, we beseech You, that, meditating upon these mysteries, in the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may both imitate what they contain,  and obtain what they promise.  We ask this through the same Christ our Lord.  Amen.
