Silence

In silence we are faced with starkness but also peace. There are many kinds of silence, as anyone familiar with "A man for all seasons" will know. There is the silence of hostility, of despair or  of calm and tranquillity. The silence sought in prayer is that of tranquillity, of being and feeling at one with the creator without the need of anything to help us.

For many this silence is found in times of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, or in time spent in church or for some in a favourite spot in the garden or park.

It is space when we can be alone with God, opening up our whole being to him in a way which is beyond words.

Most people find this very idea daunting, but it is a very strong tradition among the mystics which should not be ignored. It takes work and time. No one can jump into an hour with God, with perfect concentration and focus, straight away. Try a few minutes to start with, then longer periods as experience is gained.
